Adaptation

Adaptations help organisms to ‘solve a problem’, such as surviving a shortage of water, very cold temperatures or being eaten by a predator. Adaptations are physical trait or behaviour that helps an organism to survive and reproduce. If a plant species can adapt and survive, the greater the chance of the species surviving into the future. Adaptation usually happens through generations over a very long period of time. For example, small changes occur from the parent, to the offspring, to their offspring etc.

Student Experience

Learning outcomes

The key objectives of this interactive activity is that students will:
1.    Understand the difference between genetic and environmental adaptations
2.    Explore how native plants are adapted to environmental conditions in Australia
3.    Investigate some adaptations between plants and animals
4.    Understand how adaptations lead to diversity
5.    Consider how the environment adapts to changes in land-use and climate
